Gobsmacked Part Two

[Scroll down to the next entry to read Part One]

So CTU has briefed the President about where they stand with Henderson and the success Curtis had saving the people at the hospital.

And then Kim arrived at CTU. I’ve sort of been waiting for this since the season began. I don’t care what the Kim-haters say, I have always liked her and I don’t care who knows it. So I’m interested in the father-daughter reunion because while I love me some Action Jack, I also love to see the personal side of him.

Audrey calls Jack and suggests that it might be easier for Kim to process the news that Jack’s alive if she hears it first before being confronted by the sight of him unprepared. I think that was a smashing idea. So when she tells Kim, she’s met with stunned silence. Kim arrived at CTU with a man - looks like an older man and we find out later he’s a shrink. Now, if he’s there as her shrink or as her shrink-cum-boyfriend we don’t quite know yet. And as Jack rides back to CTU with Henderson (who is yammering on about how he’s not hurting the country, he’s protecting it. But he won’t say from what) Jack learns that Chase left Kim not long after he “died.” What a dick. I thought better of Chase.

So while she’s dealing with that, the President calls in his Veep. Apparently the Veep has a bit of an agenda and recommends to Logan that “Pre-emptive martial law” be declared but Mike is not happy about that. But Logan is. Because someone walked into the room and started giving him a plan - in other words, someone started to take the burden of you know, actually running the country, off his shoulders so he could go back to making public appearances and waving at the cameras while smarter people do all the work.

Aaaaaaanyway, Bierko’s flunky has altered McGill’s keycard with his likeness (but McGill’s info) and waltzed into CTU with a smirk on his face. Three guess as to what the git has in his briefcase. Yep - as soon as he guy walked into a ventilation room in CTU I blurted, “Oh shit oh shit oh shit” before I remembered my daughter was in the room. So now I am spitting soap bubbles as I write this.

And now Jack’s back. Henderson’s taken to holding and Jack has to reunite with Kim. He’s nervous and scared. Funny how Jack can think nothing of having to crawl under floorboards to escape a bomb but seeing Kim makes him stammer and fidget nervously. It’s endearing, and it’s what makes the character of Jack so much more than just some superagent you know?

The reunion scene was great I thought. I didn’t know what to expect really. I half-wanted Kim to fling herself into her daddy’s arms but I guess she’s got some issues - that and she doesn’t fully understand the danger she was in at all. She’s mistaken in that she thinks Jack didn’t trust her to know. But later when Kim finds out (from Chloe of course - I’m telling you Chloe is an oracle. Always listen to her and her blunt little statements about life. She’s always right.) that Michelle was killed, Palmer was killed and Tony was almost killed - three of the four people who knew Jack was alive are dead or nearly so. And Chloe herself was almost killed until Jack saved her. When Kim finds all this out I think her shell began to soften.

In the clinic, a very distraught and grief-stricken Tony forces Buchanan to tell him whatever he can about who killed Michelle. Buchanan relents a little and tells him that one of the leads they have is Henderson - a man Tony knew as well as Jack. Tony begs Buchanan not to let him cut a deal. He wants revenge you can tell.

Off in an interrogation room, Henderson is strapped in and about to endure some torture. Jack looks on impassively while the Dreaded Shot of Liquid Pain is given to him by another Johnson. Henderson does not cave.

Next we learn that Martha’s a closet smoker. Heheh. She’s trying to sneak a puff but Mike interrrupts to plea with her to make up with Logan because he knows Logan will listen to Martha. He explains the difficulty the president had with his decision and Martha is swayed. She goes to Logan and lets him know she’s sort of forgiven him. And gives him a bit of a pep talk too so he can get back on track. Mushy mushy, enough of that.

Meanwhile poor CTU analyst, Carrie, is sent off to her death by *sniffle* Edgar when she reports an anamoly to him. He’s too busy so he sends her to investigate it. Little do they know it’s the flunky setting the timer on the nerve gas. She gets a blade in her spinal chord for her troubles just as she spots the canister and whips out her phone.

[We interrupt this recap to SQUEEEEE over the new X-men 3 trailer. "SQUEEEEEE!!" Back to the recap.]

At CTU Buchanan has the unhappy job of telling McGill that his sister was shot and killed. When he learns the boyfriend is dead and they were killed by professionals Lynn finally admits they had his keycard. A search of the gate logs show that McGill’s card was used to get into the building and a lockdown is initiated.

As the search begins for the flunky, Edgar goes to look for the analyst he sent off and discovers her dead body. The flunky is loose and manages to grab a security guard (red shirt, hehe) to use as a means to escape the building, but that fails so he shoots the guard and takes his radio so he can monitor where they are searching for him. When Jack discovers the body he figures that out though and tricks him. When Jack yells, “Freeze!” it was amusing to see the flunky actually jump like Jack said, “Boo!”

Jack was unable to get the flunky without shooting him but he finds a PDA with CTU’s schematics on it and figures out that nerve gas is in the building. An evac is ordered but too late! The canister releases the gas and people start dropping as it filters from the outer rooms in. Chloe quickly finds several rooms that can be sealed and Kim, Chloe, Audrey, Buchanan, Kim’s shrink/bf, and Jack make it into one of them.

But Edgar doesn’t :( he was looking for Carrie and did not get back to the floor in time before everything was sealed. Watching him stare in horror at Chloe as he realized his fate, and as he sank to the floor while Chloe cried for him… So sad. So awful. I loved the chemistry between Chloe and Edgar. It will be missed.

And for anyone secretly hoping he’s still alive and can be revived… I hate to break it to you but they closed with the silent clock. He’s gone.

An incredible night tonight. I’m exhausted just writing about it. 24 is having an incredible year.

  1. Wow. I am still shaking, and it has been 2 hours since it ended. What an amazing show.
What will happen now? Jack will have to pull some major sh!t.

  2. Man, they killed Edgar??? Edgar?? I just recently read an interview in a magazine between Chloe and Edgar - that they have a secret “love” or “romance” and that they will be in for the long haul - I can’t freaking believe they killed Edgar man !!!! That sucks! Ah but ofcourse a great show….!! Sigh….sniff for Edgar…!

  3. well, not more shocking than killing President Palmer, but still pretty incredible. I’ll miss Edgar a lot. I wonder how this will change Chloe…

um, how did 2 experienced CTU agents, Jack and Curtis, become such bad marksmen? They killed both terrorists instead of shooting them in the leg, or groin, heck, they could’ve even pulled a “cowboy” move and shot the guns out of their hands. Nope…shot through the heart…(no Bon Jovi songs, please. :-) )

So I guess we’ll have to wait a week longer for the next hour. What’s taking the 24 timeslot next week? I haven’t looked yet.

    Great summaries again, Melia. Thanks.

  4. wow…ok, i can’t think of anything but wow for the moment. suddenly the air force one scene from last season seems like its nothing. just wow. the look on chloe’s face when she saw edgar come walking into the room almost made me cry, but i had a half hour of sleep last night, so i am beyond true emotion. in my opinion, this is the best episode i have ever seen. this season is really shaping up to be far and away the best season yet. with the subarov affair slowly being uncovered, president sissy-pants is either going to have to clean up his act or clean up his office and leave. i think martha will finally make an impression on him. but as far as ctu goes, its not going to be the same without edgar. he was one of the old guard, and was loyal to the right people. i was honestly expecting the woman at the door to be audrey, but honestly, i wouldn’t have been quite so upset as i am about edgar. and its not like they implied that he died, they actually showed it happening second by second. the way he laid down and accepted his fate was horrifying. anyway, i am going to get myself some sleep before i have a nervous breakdown. goodnight all, and let’s hope this season continues to be this damn good, because this is the 24 that i love and missed sorely in season 3. last season was good, but this one is out of this world.

  5. as for next week, i am pretty sure that its going to be its normal time. i think they just put these two eps together, due to the fact that they were basically one long episode, and would have lost much of their impact if they were split up. if i’m wrong, please correct me, but they definitely showed the preview for “next monday’s episode”. of course i didn’t watch it because those damn things piss me off. yes, i’m addicted, but i don’t need a constant reminder all week of what i THINK is going to happen based on 10 seconds of video. one night of crack a week is all i need, thank you very much!

  6. oh my god they killed kenny! oops i mean edgar!

Ya know i almost cried, when i saw edgar hit the ground. it wouldnt be a show with out someone dieing. starting with president palmer and tonys wife.. I didnt expect the new girl to die so soon. was it two episodes or one. well she did good for how ever long she was there. oh and heres the question is lynn dead????? so much drama could you imagine a movie deal?

  7. Nooo Lyn’s not dead. I saw a flash of him on the preview for next week.

  8. Next week will be good.

I don’t think anyone mentioned this yet, but I think Tony is locked in a room with Henderson.

  9. Something doesn’t work out here. So the terrorists were in contact with McGill’s sister’s boyfriend and had worked out a fairly sophisticated plan ahead of time so they could get hold of McGill’s keycard. But it wasn’t until the end of last week’s show that the terrorists told Logan they would use the nerve gas on Americans - and McGill had already lost his keycard by that point. Also, very early on, the terrorists were planning on smuggling the canisters to Russia in a shipping container, and mentioned several times that they wanted to use the gas in Moscow and had no intention of attacking Americans. So where did this ‘nerve gas in CTU’ plot come from?

  10. anon, bierko had plenty of back up plans if he could kill subarov. He said to the president before the subarov attack that he would use it on american soil if someone try to stop the attack on the motorcade.
Does the syntox not get to Tony and Henderson?
Also Curtis is out in the field, he did not go back to CTU after the hospital situtation yet, he could be huge in the next episodes.

  11. okay so if mcgill doesn’t have a key card cause he got mugged….how did he get back in the ctu building?????

  12. Not that I can’t suspend my disbelief, but how easy is it to reprogram a CTU security access card…especially a card that belongs to one of the higher-up head honchos in charge? The system knew it was Lyn’s card (Chloe later could see it was used), but yet still accepted a picture ID change from the bad dude. Wouldn’t the security guard accepting the card have known its not Lyn? Oh well…great show outside of that glitch, imo.

  13. The keycard thing was pure fiction. No real system stores pictures / access rights / data in a decentralized fashion (on the card).

  14. This is such bullshit. I can’t believe they killed Edgar. I am so over this show. They are killing off all the good people - they should’ve killed off Audrey or someone else - but Edgar? That’s crap. He was great and I know they have to keep us on our toes by *sometimes* killing off the good people - but Michelle, the good Prez and now EDGAR? It’s too much.

  15. Edgar’s demise was very upsetting but hey as long as Chloe is still around CTU is in good hands. Besides, no one can replace Chloe’s quirky character and the expressions she makes. She is absolutely hillarious and ads so much to the show.

  16. -RIP EDGAR-

These episodes really depressed me. I like cried when Tony found out that Michelle was dead. Poor Guy. Then when the nerve gas was in CTU and you saw Edgar die. Then they showed Chloe’s face as she watched him die from the safty of the sealed off room. *sniffle* I got like no sleep b/c i was so sad. Oh well Life goes on.

  17. Edgar falls behind a desk in the last scene. I am willing to bet that one of those protective gas masks is in the bottom drawer of that desk. The next episode will no doubt begin with him lying on the floor and, gasping his seemingly last breath, opening the drawer to find a mask. He’ll slowly put it on and be back in action.

  18. once the nerve gas is in you…you’re dead..the gas mask won’t save edgar

  19. No, because the Sentox is a chemical weapon, therfore he must inhale a certain amount to cause damage. There are different stages in chemical warfare like that with the gases (dependent on the gas) starts with coughing and dizzyness. Were we last saw Edgar… But don’t get your hopes up. Although I hope what dominator said was true.

  20. Deadger…may he rest in peace. Watch out for Mike - he’s done a few suspicious things this year. Kim’s psychologist is in with Henderson - he was planted by Henderson to keep an eye on Kim after Jack “died” because Henderson knew that, if he were still alive, Jack would try to contact Kim. Knowing this, Jack kept away. What’s up with the Mrs. Logan/Aaron holding-hands scene? Hmmmmmm.

  21. What a show!!! I am new to 24 and just started watching this season. But WOW. Jack rocks!

I was flipping when he shot Miriam and then when Carrie got it…but never suspected Edgar would go. I will miss him. And that look on Chloes face in the glass is the first time I have seen her NOT frowning.

So what about Lynn, Henderson and Tony? Were they all killed too? Were they in a safe zone? Will Curtis be able to come in from outside and save them?

  22. Welcome! 24 is a great show!
As for Henderson Lynn and Tony, if you heard which I did but it was hard chloe said she can seal off the situation room, the medical room, and some other room I forgot. So I am positive they make it, which isnt much of a spoiler.

  23. two minutes of silence for Edgar

  24. I have been a fan of this show since its premiere in November 2001. I figured anyone with the balls to show a plane getting blown up in mid-air two months after the worst terrorist attack in history had to have some gutsy people heading it up. So I watched and was perpetually floored year after year. Some of the best cliffhangers and shocking moments I have ever seen on television like Terris death, Palmers assassination attempt part 1,to Jack shooting Chappelle in the back of the head, to shooting down Air Force One, to the first 15 minutes of this season. Great stuff all around and I have been impressed all year. This is easily the best season of 24 yet, better even than season 2. And these two episodes stand as a landmark achievement for this show. From the interrogation of Chris Henderson to Tony learning the truth about Michelle, to the attack on CTU and finally the heartwrenching death of Edgar (yes, he is dead. the silent clock is the death knell for all who die tragically. See Terri, george Mason, Ryan Chappelle, and now, Edgar Styles.) this was a balls-out emotional tour-de-force with shocks, thrills, and tears. Here’s hoping that they didn’t peak yet this season. And yes I go with all the others in saying that I think the keycard is a bit implausible. However, terrorists are tricky these days and can do some interesting things. Besides, they didn’t realize it was Lynn’s keycard until AFTER Bierko flunky number four had planted the gas. On top of that, Lynn never reported it stolen. Add to that the fact that the fact that Bierko flunky no. 4 seemingly had good credentials, and well, this happens. It’s sad that Edgar is gone, I know. I really liked his chemistry with Chloe. But, all this knitpicking isn’t going to bring him back. Just kick back and enjoy the best season of 24 yet. And don’t tell me about spoilers!!!

  25. Anyone placing bets on who dies next, btw? Tony, perhaps? This season has proven that no one is sacred, not even one of the two main characters.

  26. I bet it is Tony also, He just lost his wife and he has nothing to live for. Although, has anyone thought about Tony and Kim as a couple, that would throw a monkey wrench in the plans.

  27. Kim will have breathed her last before the show ends this year. Also - for those new this year and for those who may have forgotten…the Chinese played a large part in last year’s ending and have yet to appear this year. If, no, WHEN they find out Jack is sill alive, there’ll be hell to pay!!

  28. This was the best episode they’ve done since Chappelle died. It may even top it.

  29. after watching it for the third time, i have to say this is quite possibly the best episode i’ve ever seen. when chappelle died, it was one person. yes, he was a major character, and important, but now we are talking about dozens killed INSIDE ctu. the last time anything like this happened was season 2 where the bomb went off in the building, and from what i remember, not that many people died. at this point, ctu is basically out of commission until they can get a hazmat team to decontaminate the building. they can’t even control anything from where they are, and they can’t leave their rooms, so i am thinking the next episode or two is going to involve curtis in a big bad way. this season is far and away the best yet, and its only halfway done, so it can only get better.

  30. The next person to die on 24 will be Henderson, because Tony is locked in with Henderson and as far as he knows Henderson is responsible for his wife’s death and he’s gonna be pissed! I wouldn’t be surprised if Tony kills Henderson first and then himself afterwards as he no longer has a reason to live after avenging his wife’s death…

  31. When Jack jumped Henderson, he should have yelled, “Dead or alive, you’re coming with me!”

And then when Henderson cuffs himself, Jack should have said, “Thank you for your co-operation.”

    =)

  32. omfg im crossing my fingers that edgar and his lucky lisp in some miraculous way survived

  33. silent clock rule for edgar. plus, its on the official site that he died. you can’t undo that. edgar is dead. As for Kim being the next bombshell death, thats plausible as she has essentially outlived her usefulness.
