Byebye Fingernails
My nails are going to suffer dreadfully this season I can tell. After tonight's two hours they're looking pretty ragged.
Is it just me or is the imagery so far just staggering? I keep having moments where I wonder about how awful it would be to be stuck in these situations. The shot of Derek kneeling for 15 minutes surrounded by the blood of the unlucky hostage before him is the scene that sticks with me tonight. Last night it was gutting to see Jack face President Palmer's body only feet away.
*shudder*
Anyway, I'm still trying to catch my breath. The cold stares of the terrorists as they brutally shot two hostages while Slimy Selfish Bastard Logan pussyfooted around and made unreasonable demands on Buchanon who looked for all the world like he'd like to slug the president. He's not alone there.
I sort of knew young Derek would be chosen as a hostage but it was really riveting the way the whole scenario played out. I knew Jack would save him and the hostages somehow but for the life of me I couldn't see how he would do it. But he did of course.
Loved Chloe tonight. I say that more and more because I love that she's a part of this show. I wonder if she was meant to just be a bit part but she rocked so hard they expanded her role. Whatever happened I'm just glad she's there. She brings a level of unintentional humour to the show that just... works. You know?
I still hate Logan. I think he's a dick. My daughter thinks the Russian president looks like Jack Bristow. And the mole at the president's retreat - Walt? I think that's his name... Still trying to suss him out. Why is he a part of all this? Is he just a highly placed lackey? That would be my guess. He'll end up caught and killed I bet.
And is Geraint Wyn Davies the top of the bad guy chain? He seems to be so far but as we all know (Amador anyone?) there always seems to be an even bigger fish.
What else... Argh this is so hard with two hours to process :) But I'M NOT COMPLAINING :)
Ohhhh Sean Astin appeared tonight as Lynn McGill. I'm reserving judgement on him. First impression was he's a beaurocratic prick, but he did sort of help Jack save the hostages. And he was humble about it. I think he's just socially inept like Chloe.
I'm going to sum up quickly what happened because I'm really kind of out of the recap biz (hint hint - anyone interested pop me an email) - Russian terrorists took over an airport and demanded Logan not go through with the signing of an historical arms treaty with the russian president. Jack managed to position himself inside so he could pass on intel to CTU for a rescue. But after his girlfriend's son became one of the hostages and was about to be executed, he had to give himself up to save his life. Logan's wife was still convinced Palmer was trying to warn her so she cheekily talked her way into a room with transcripts of her phone calls and found Palmer's call which she cunningly hid in her bra. The presidential mole discovered this and chloroformed her and took it back. Logan carried on whining about this "Hallmark of his Presidency" until I wanted to poke his eyeballs out and refused to stop the signing of the treaty.
Jack managed to communicate to CTU that he was giving them intel under duress and this was discovered because the new top dog at CTU is an uber-nerd who figured it out. The terrorists all died in a ripper flanking maneuver led by Calm, Cool Curtis. But just before it all went down Jack saw the lead terrorist pass some kind of card to one of the hostages who must have been a plant. Upon closer scrutiny this fake hostage was none other than Badger from "Firefly." :) Sad little king of a sad little hill. No one but a Browncoat will get that. Anyway he slipped away just before Jack was taken into custody to answer the charges he was involved in the hits on Palmer and Tony and Michelle.
We followed Badger as he went into some kind of bunker that held a bunch of canisters which they then began to load. So my guess is the whole hostage thing was a diversion maybe? Had to be. Nick Knight didn't seem all that upset that the hostages were saved. But if it was a diversion, wtf was the point? The card came from the baggage guy who ate the cyanide. Why couldn't Badger just pop into the baggage guy's office and get the card from where ever he had it hidden?
Ahh well wait and see.
Excellent shows again tonight. It's going to be a long wait til Monday :)

I just want to state for the record that as an award show junkie, it totally sucks that the Golden Globes are on a Monday, and that they are on same time as Jack.
That is all.

So much to process
Man oh man. I am still trying to process these last two hours. Good thing I taped it because I'm going to need to watch these again. (and again and again :) ) Unfortunately my Fox affiliate decided to lose picture during the all-crucial first ten minutes of the first episode. I missed most of the scene with Tony and Michelle. I mean, I know what happened obviously but it was still a bit irritating not to be able to see it.
But enough of that. Back to the incredible-ness that is 24. It was so weird to go from elation at seeing Palmer again so soon to shocked horror when he was struck by the bullet. I don't think it completely sank in until the second hour and we were confronted with his body on the floor. God that sucked so much. The look on Jack's face when he saw it too... You could see the anger building up in him - and then you see him push it back down inside him. Kiefer's so good at acting without having to speak.
Anyway just when we were starting to grasp Palmer's death we're hit again with Michelle blowing up. Not Michelle :( She was such a kickass agent. I suppose at the very least she got to spend her last days back together and happy with Tony. Speaking of which, Tony is not dead, but close enough. That blast had to have burnt off his little soul patch.
And for god's sake this was just the first ten minutes.
Just as an aside, seeing Chloe doing the one night shag thing was hilarious :) She's even socially dysfunctional outside of CTU - not that I doubted it but it's fun to see her outside of work. I would also not be surprised to find that her coworker/shag is a mole of some kind. he seems dodgy.
We're stuck with wishy-washy pussy President Logan. I hated him last season and I can see I'm going to *really* hate him this season. A man who only cares about image and media manipulation... it sickened me. I'm glad he's got an allegedly kooky wife. Jean Smart is fantastic and I can't wait to find out if she's really delusional or if she's really quite sane. From the ending of the second ep tonight, I think the latter will be true.
And Jack. Oh and Jack. Still one step ahead of everyone. Only Jack could slip into a building chock-a-block full of Feds and poke around for clues. I'm glad he convinced Wayne (ugh, not Wayne. he always annoyed me) that he's being setup. Yes Jack has gone from presumed dead to hunted. The assassination of Palmer and the hit on Tony and Michelle, and the attempted hit on Chloe was all done to make it seem to CTU that Jack is the killer.
It didn't take Jack long to be sucked back into his old life as if there's some kind of curse on him that will never allow him to live a normal life. Which is all he seems to want. But I personally think it's too late for Jack. He's seen and done too much, and had to endure too much to ever be "normal."
Caught up in the madness is Jack's new girlfriend's son who was suspicious of him. The kid followed him when Jack went to meet Chloe and so was dragged along on Jack's exploits.
And there's the baddie - the man orchestrating the hits and the events apparently coming up - it's Nick Knight :) So yeah I guess he's on the show, hehehe. Shame though, the baddies never last long and it's good to see Geraint on telly again.
So Logan is focused on his summit with the Russian president and even though the probability was high of a hit on the Russian, he refuses to change his plan because it would look bad in the media. Ugh I could see the waves of sleeziness eminating from him.
Jack found a clue in Palmer's apartment that led him to an airport. As he returned the kid to his mother he leaves them and enters the airport to follow up on it. At the same time a bunch of... terrorists for lack of a better word pile out of a van and head inside. The kid thinks he needs to warn Jack and heads inside but as he does, the van blows up and the terrorists pull out weapons and begin taking hostages.
Tick freaking boom man. It was a brilliant, wonderful exhilarating start to the new season. I'm so jazzed about it and I hope you guys are too.

Let me know what you lot thought in the comments :) See you tomorrow night!

Squeeeee!
It's here, it's finally here! 24 Day! In ten hours my Jack is Back baby!
You know, I like the fact that we get a straight run through the whole season without breaks, but I have to say that the 8 months we have to wait for a new season is torturous. I understand the reasons for it and stuff but my inner selfish brat wants it sooner :)
Anyway, here's hoping Season 5 rocks our socks (is there any doubt?). Check back with me later for reaction to tonight's show.
