    Some of you have asked...

In some of the comments, a few of you asked if I could open a forum here for you guys to delve deeper into discussion about the show if you needed to. I resisted at first, mainly because I used to have one but no one really used it. But back then I didn't get the traffic I get now (THANK YOU!) and maybe it's time to revisit the idea.

    Here's the situation:

I have a forum that's been going for a couple of years now called KieferLand and it was, as you might have guessed, devoted mainly to Kiefer and his work and some fanfic etc. It's a busy board. Or it was before it died. It was hosted on my main website, ukmelia.com, and then mysteriously quit working a couple of weeks ago.

So I got the brilliant idea of moving that forum to this domain (which makes sense since Kiefer IS 24 etc.) and the members have happily changed their bookmarks and all that good stuff.

Then I remembered the request for a 24 board here and thought why not combine the two? What a brilliant freaking idea Mel! :D

So I've created a special '24addict' section of the Kiefer board devoted to the show, the good guys, the baddies, and for theories and stuff. You can join the board at 24addict.com/kieferland/ and while away the long months until Season 6 begins.

If you're feeling adventerous you can explore other parts of the board (we have some great 'ficcers there) and meet some really lovely people who love Kief as much as we love 24. One thing I need to mention is that KieferLand is a friendly community and my members there will be happy to welcome any of you 24 fans there with open arms as long as you don't bite or nip or tear heads off etc.

I hope you'll join us there and stay a part of the 24addict site during the downtime. Next season I promise good things for the site, so even if you don't want to join the board, I hope you'll come back then and have fun with the recaps and comments.

    Thanks!

    The past catches up

So as Martha is doing her duty to the country, Jack and Aaron work with Novick and Chloe to get Jack on board the President's helicopter as one of the pilots. This requires some quick faxing and scanning on Novick's part but they get it done. One of the pilots enters the building and Jack quickly dispatches him (humanely of course. Just a quick squeeze to the neck - sans thighs unfortunately - and he's out cold), gets his papers and off he goes to the chopper.

Soon Logan and a couple of agents are on board and they take off. Once they're away from the compound Jack threatens the pilot by telling him he can either just keep flying or he can die and jack will fly it himself. Tough call there. He keeps flying. Jack moves to the cabin area, tasers the SS agents, cuffs Logan, and just sits and stares at Logan. Just sits... and stares. It was magnificent watching Logan squirm under Jack's icy glare.

The chopper lands, Jack tasers the pilot and leads Logan into an abandoned building. Logan whines and squirms some more because he doesn't know what Jack's going to do. He foolishly offers Jack money. He tries to make a deal with Jack. Pffft. Loser. As Jack readies Logan by searching him and removing everything in his pockets and cuffing him to a pole, Chloe's ex-hubby shows up with the equipment he helped modify. In a brief, cute moment there, he spies Logan cuffed to the pole and nonchalantly tells Jack Chloe wants him to call her. You kind of had to see it to know what I mean but it made me giggle.

Anyway, Jack sets up his equipment - video and audio feed etc. - while Logan tries to tell Jack he won't crack under pressure but even if he did it wouldn't hold up because anyone would say whatever Jack wants while being tortured. He knows he's being recorded. Jack begins interrogating him, telling him that he has no plans to torture him. Just kill him if he doesn't get what he wants. And he's very convincing. Jack pulls up a chair close to Logan and tells him a little story. A story of how he was warned 18 months ago that he was in danger - danger that led him to fake his death and lose contact with his only daughter. He tells the President that he knows that danger was Logan. He also tells him that if Logan thinks Jack will hesitate to put a bullet in his brain, then he doesn't know him. (Hehe, he doesn't know Jack.)

Jack gives Logan to the count of three to confess and he counts off. But when he gets to three, Jack fails. He fails. He can't pull the trigger. And then Secret Service arrive and Jack gives himself up quietly. It was sad. But a I'm rewatching this scene knowing what I know about the ending, I see Logan begin to put everything Jack pulled out of his pockets back into his pockets. I didn't catch that the first time :)

So Jack is taken away and Logan continues on to the airport and his appearance by Palmer's coffin is just sickening. As Martha waits for him, Novick sidles up and lets her know Jack failed. She's crushed. As she goes to stand by Logan for photo ops, Martha starts to crack. The site of Logan pretending to care about Palmer is the proverbial straw and she just loses it. She begins screaming about him being a murderer and all the other accusations. Agents haul her off to a nearby hangar. and Logan follows to "check" on her.

But what he really does is hit her (bastard!) and after searching through her things for recording devices they have quite the shouting match. She screams her accusations at him and he actually defends his actions (and admits to them.) Then he threatens Martha by telling her he'll load her up with drugs and have her committed for the rest of her life.

And I'm going to wreck the momentum here to mention during the break here that for the first time in my life, I had to rewind a commercial and watch it again. It was a Sprint cellphone ad that quite frankly made me laugh harder than I've laughed in days. I'm not going to recap the ad but if you see the Sprint ad with ben Stiller in a locker room talking about how his phone has Crime Deterrent, watch it and laugh :)

And now back to our show.

A composed Martha walks with Logan to the podium where he begins to give his speech about the days events and Palmer's death.

But back at CTU, Chloe has set up a conference with the Attorney General much to the surprise of Karen Hayes and Buchanan. And as Logan gives his insipid speech, the AG and CTU agents listen in horror as Chloe replays the entire shouting match between Martha and Logan. And during the speech a federal marshall gets a phone call. He and several agents head up to the podium and gather around the President.

After he finishes speechifying, the agents inform him they are there to take him into custody (can they do that?) and also inform him of the accusations against him which he denies. The marshall calmly reaches into Logan's coat pocket and withdraws a pen with a mini recorder that Jack attached to it. Stunned he turns to Martha who gives him a fabulous smirk and looks down her nose at him. Novick behind her is also smirking. Ahhhhhhhh...

As they lead him away, in some kind of cruel justice, David Palmer is able to be present when the man who ordered his death is broght down. I thought that was pretty neat. The military give a 21 gun salute to a great man while the lesser man is led away in shame. Brilliant.

We come back to Jack who is sitting on a bumper dabbing at cut when Audrey pulls up. They have a reunion, there's a bit of snogging involved but they're interrupted as Jack is told Kim Bauer is on a landline in the building nearby. Surprised but smiling he leaves Audrey (with an "I love you") and goes to the phone. As he picks up the receiver he is ambushed by men in balaclavas and they subdue him with chloroform AND a knockout shot. Not before Jack takes one down with his feet though...

At CTU, Karen and Buchanan wrap things up, with Buchanan awkwardly asking karen to go for brekkie but she can't go. But she takes a raincheck in an "I like you too so ask me again soon" kind of way. I like thinking they'll hook up. They'd make a good couple. I'm pleased that Karen turned out to be so helpful. As Karen leaves, Buchanan goes to Chloe and congratulates her on the good work she's done. And then he gives her something he found in Edgar's possessions. She opens it up and it's a lovely photo of her and Edgar together. And a collective "Awwwwwwwwww" went up around the country. Chloe begins to cry a little and her ex is there to console. I thought that was nice.

And finally, Audrey goes to check on Jack and discovers he's missing. We then see a battered, bloody and bruised Jack being dragged into a large room and the thugs pull off their masks to reveal their Chinese faces. Oh dear.

They hold him on the ground as the Chinese investigator reminds Jack that China has a long memory. Jack says, "I know how this works." and asks for one phone call. Realizing that ain't gonna happen he mumbles, "Kill me... just kill me..." But the man tells Jack that he's far too valuable to kill. And as the scene pans out we discover that Jack's aboard a ship bound for Shanghei. *gulp*

What a cliffhanger! Forget the fact that he was beaten and transported onto a ship out to sea in minutes. I don't care that 24 acts in its own spacetime continuum. That was a great ending :)

SO yes, it's over. For another 8 months we'll have to live without Jack. We'll be speculating and guesstimating until FOX decides to tease us with a trailer here and there. And finally the DVDs will come out in December and will include some kind of transitory bonus scene and trailer to get us all hyped up again. I know the wait sucks but frankly, to me it's worth it to get a straight shot of the best show on TV every week for five months.

I'm going to take a minute to thank all of you who stopped by and read the rambling of some chick in Nebraska. The place got busier this season and I think it's because this season was so good and so many people got into it. I won't compare seasons because my opinion is subjective but I will say that I've had a fantastic time writing all of this this season and look forward to it again in 8 months.

I'll still be posting here too throughout the next 8 months so check back now and again :) Thanks again!

    Murder 101

    Well.

It's over. It's all over. Five months of my life devoted to this season and it just leaves me heartlessly without any regard to my needs. I got so used to my Monday rituals. I have no idea what I'll do with myself for the next 8 bloody months.

What a feckin' ending though eh? I like Jack bloody. I like him broken. Because the moment he gathers his strength and unleashes his fury on his enemies is a truly awesome moment to behold.

In the final hours of the day I felt the show was wrapped up to my satisfaction. The payoff of seeing Logan finally busted (and that wonderful smirk on Martha's face) was completely worth a season of putting up with that loser. But I get ahead of myself and I should probably quit rambling and get to the recapping eh? All right.

Previously, on 24: Bierko and his merry band of terrorists had killed everyone aboard a submarine docked at a civilian dock with their backup canister of nerve gas and taken over the boat (ship? Whatev. It floats.) They dispersed the gas, vented it and were then able to remove their masks. Meanwhile Jack and Henderson along with a couple of nameless agents approached the sub to do some recon. Time is of the essence though as CHloe tells Jack they have less than 20 minutes to get aboard and disable the 12 or 13 multiple weapon warheads that Bierko is currently arming. His plan is to detonate them at various key points within range for maximum damage in retribution for Logan signing that treaty with Suvarov.

As Jack looks for a way on board, Henderson notices some kind of signal beacon or something lowered into the water. Chloe monitors all frequencies and picks up a distress call from a survivor on board the ship. Jack makes contact and we find a young, terrified enginees who had his wits about him and sealed himself in an airtight section of the sub. He and the engineer come to the conclusion that the kid will need to get to a foreward hatch, kill the hostile guarding it and open it to let Jack in.

Rooney (the engineer) then gets schooled in Jack Bauer's class called, "How to slit someone's throat in 5 easy steps." I wonder if he transfers credits...

Rooney gathers his courage, looks at his dead shipmate and manages to kill the guard. Not quite as cleanly as Jack would have done it, but Jack's just better. I think he would have given Rooney a B-. Points off for multiple stab wounds.

Rooney opens the hatch and Jack and his team infiltrate the sub. As Rooney helps one last time by creating a diversion, Jack and Henderson get to the controlroom, kill the guy working the software there and Henderson goes to work stopping the missile launch while Jack goes off to keep Bierko out of the way. There's a shootout, of course, and Bierko ends up deadski - and how does he die? By Jack's THIGHS OF DOOM!! Oh how I love it when he kills the bad guys with his thighs :)

In a race against the clock, Henderson manages to stop the missile launch with seconds to spare. Lemme tell you, it was a nailbiter too with Jack creeping around belowstairs and Henderson's fingers flying across the keyboard ans the seconds count down... I always, always always get nervous whenever there's any kind of countdown sequence involving a weapon of mass destruction. In my head I know that it won't go off of course, but I'm always holding my breath until it does. I would not make a good bomb squad tech.

But I digress. After Henderson stopped the missiles from launching he disappears. Jack corners him topside though and they have a showdown - Henderson has the drop on Jack til he tries to fire - but his gun is full of blanks. Jack is not an idiot. With almost a grin on his face as he realizes his stupid error, Henderson listens as Jack reminds him that he killed David, Tony and Michelle.

And then Jack kills Henderson in cold blood. I'm not sure how I feel about this. yes I know Henderson did a bunch of bad bad things.. It's just that Jack killing him seemed very... unJack-like. *sigh* It's as if anything that was inside of Jack that still felt emotions is dead and he's just a killing machine now. I know he isn't but that's how I felt when he shot Henderson.

So with the submarine all secure, Jack calls CTU and asks Chloe to help him as he goes after Logan - under the radar of course. He then heads off for Logan's compound in the hopes of extracting a confession out of him.

Back at the Compound, Martha has been waiting impatiently for Novick to get out of a meeting with Logan (while they dealt with the sub situation) so she could get his help in both getting Aaron off the compound, and on how to proceed with taking down the President. Martha brings Novick to Aaron and they fill him in. Understandably, he's shocked. For a brief moment I thought Novick would display his weasley-ness (I haven't forgotten what he did to Palmer) but I'm glad that he didn't. Instead he helps get Aaron to safety and orchestrated a meetup between Jack and Aaron (after a lovely, tender moment between Martha and Aaron that just tugged at my heart - thought for a second he was going to snog her but he only said a simple, dignified, "Thank you." It was enough.)

At CTU, Chloe is trying to modify some equipment Jack needs but she needs help. So she requisitions her, erm, ex-husband who's even wizzier than she is apparently. That came out of nowhere, but hey, it was fun to watch them banter. A small dose of humour in this intense hour. It was needed I think :)

Back again to the compound, Novick fills Martha in on Jack's plan to confront Logan because they need her to stall Logan who is about to leave for the airport where David Palmer's body is being transported back to DC. Logan wants to eulogize the man you see and snake some more face time with the press (the man makes me want to take a shower everytime I write about his sliminess.)

As Jack and Aaron hook up and head for an outbuilding on the compound, Martha must go to Logan and pretend to ask him to forgive the harsh words she hurled at him. And then she makes the greatest sacrifice known to man - she sleeps with this man she despises to give Jack more time to get set up. She's going to need about 10 showers after that. Or maybe just 8. He was quick. Which is what I expected. And now I have a horrible mental image of him clumsily (and quickly) banging Martha that is going to require a brillo pad on my brain. Yuck. At least I can take comfort in the knowledge that all of you now have this mental image as well :)

As Jack and Aaron get into the outbuilding, Novick contacts them and asks Jack how far he's going to go to get the confession. "As far as I have to." He replies coldly.

Tick Boom. I'll carry on in a new entry :)

    T-minus 30 minutes

Can't resist the urge to post before the show and give you guys a place to put comments while I toil away on the recap after (which will take a lot longer tonight than usual because of the 2 hour finale so I hope you all appreciate the fact that I will be a zombie at work tomorrow.)

My daughter and I are so looking forward to the show tonight. We've been squeeing all weekend :)

I've noticed both in the comments and in various articles online that a lot of people think 24 is treading water next to the shark jump area. I'll admit this season has required me to use my special powers of belief suspension a bit more than usual but I also notice that the level of Google alerts I get with articles about the show have become more numerous this season than any other.

This leads me to believe that despite mind-bending plotlines, people are getting sucked in and the show is more popular than ever. Or it could be at its peak. It will be interesting to see if the 6th year of the show can keep up the momentum. I know I'll be watching :)
